Requesting InterLibrary Loans

How do I make a request?

  • First, register as an ILL user by completing the registration form (Create An Account ).
  • Provide complete and accurate information. DO NOT USE ABBREVIATIONS. We may not be able to process requests which are incomplete.
  • One item per request.
  • The borrower must check the FAMU Online catalog for ownership before submitting an ILL request. We cannot request items which FAMU owns, unless the item is missing from our shelves.

How long do requests take?

A minimum of three (3) to five (5) working days should be allowed to receive requested materials. However, the library will make every effort to acquire materials in a shorter time frame if possible. Articles are often received electronically, shortening the request time. Books and other returnable items may take longer, as they must be shipped. The time involved in receiving materials depends on the completeness and accuracy of your request and the response of the lending library.

How will I be notified when materials arrive?

The Interlibrary Loan staff will notify individuals by telephone or email when requested materials arrive. You may also inquire about ILL requests by phone  (850) 599-8159 or email: ill@famu.edu.

What is the loan period?

The loan period for materials borrowed through ILL services is determined by the lending library. Most lending libraries allow three weeks for loans with a renewal option of ten days upon request. Renewals must be requested at least five days before the original date expires.

How are ILL materials picked up and returned?

If possible, articles will be sent to you via email, or you may be instructed via email to retrieve the item from the ILL website. Articles do not have to be returned.

Books and other returnable items are available at the Coleman Library Information Commons Desk, and must be checked out on your Rattler card. You must return items directly to the Information Commons Desk at Coleman Library. Do not leave at other branches or drop in outside boxes.

ILL Guidelines

Who can use the ILL service?

Faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students may request materials through Interlibrary Loan.

What materials may be borrowed?

Books, tapes videos, etc. may be borrowed through ILL; however the lending library has the right to restrict use or deny the circulation of any materials. Books published before 1900 and items bound in unusual formats (such as loose-leaf binders) may not be available. Please do not request textbooks as they may not be kept for an entire semester.

How much does it cost?

Every effort is made to obtain these materials free; however, this is not always possible. If we are unable to get a request for free, you will be contacted to see if you are willing to pay for the item. Charges generally range between $10 - $15 per item.

What is the copyright restriction?

All requests for materials to be photocopied must include the applicable statement of conformance to either the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976 (CCL) or Copyright Guidelines (CCG).

What are the fines associated with ILL?

We do not charge late fees; however, the lending library may charge replacement costs and service charges if an item is not returned on time. These charges may be in excess of $100 and will be charged to your FAMU financial account. It is in your best interest to carefully observe due dates.
